Here goes, confessions from our Estheticians on spray tans gone bad.
Oh my, it does happen. A bad tan can happen. We've been spray tanning for years and as we consider ourselves expert tanner's for our customers, it can still happen. So, what can you do if you have a bad spray tan? Well, it actually starts before you even have a tan. The reason we want you to understand this is not about placing blame but rather just to have an understanding. Washing, exfoliating and not moisturizing your skin before a tan is essential. That's just the beginning.
Something else that is often the culprit is body sweat. Yup! It gets us every time. If you were to get a tan in the evening, after you get off work, you may have produced some sweat on the body during the day. Our sweat leaves salt on the body which can prohibit the solution from penetrating the skin. Sometimes the sweat you accumulate just before getting a tan can have an affect. This is common if you are getting a tan at a place you've never been to before. You are running late because your last meeting at work ran late. Then, you aren't exactly sure where you are going because you've never been to the tanning place before. Naturally this is stressful for anyone. We know because it happens to everyone from time to time. So, before you head to your tanning appointment, have a few extra minutes before you head out to keep you body temperature down.
Speaking of body temperatures, the summer heat can cause a few issues. One thing we've seen at Vanilla Sugar is that a client will come in for a tan and then hit the road for a few hours before their weekend event. If it's a hot summer day, we recommend keeping your AC on in your vehicle while you receive your tan. It's only a 15 minute appointment.
If it's raining, bring an umbrella. No more needs to be said about this.
Well, those are the biggest reasons why tans go bad. Other than that there can just be a disagreement between your natural body chemistry and our tanning solution (or the solution you may be receiving someplace else). Something else that can be an issue is that your skin is naturally dehydrated and our normal air pressure that we use is too much for your skin to handle. There are many variables and we just can't control them all. But what we can do is try to educate you on some of the variables that may occur.
One last thing that can happen..... this is a good one. Don't let your pets lick you. Multiple ingredients in our solutions are made from sugar. You taste sweet to your pets. It's cute and sweet.....literally. But not great for the perfect tan.
Now that you know what can happen we are going to share with you what to do when it just doesn't work out for you. First of all, it's a bummer. But it's easy to correct a tanning disaster, even in the nick of time for your special event.
Hopefully you'll remember that you read this page and will read it again if something goes wrong. You can always contact us at the spa via email, text, call or even our Facebook page. We are available to help!!!!
Here is the process that you'll need to do to clear up any issues with your tan.
If you are left with white spots you can still save the tan. What your goal should be is to even it out and blend it. If you like to paint, you know what we are talking about. Take the juice of one lemon and mix in a few tablespoons of baking soda or fine sugar if you don't have any baking soda. Make a paste and then get into the shower. Rub the paste gently in the areas where you need to blend. When you rub gently, you are less likely to have a strong line between the tan area and the white area. Then rinse and repeat until you achieve the desired outcome.
If you don't have lemon juice, you can use hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball. Keep rubbing to remove the color.
Last but not least, you can correct a tan by coming back in to have us see what we kind of magic we can work. We've got tricks up our sleeves. Again, you can call or text us at 309-219-1140. We serve the greater Peoria area and always available to give you the best possible spray tan and customer service possible.
