What Really Happens in a Japanese Head Spa: Beyond the Hair Wash
The first question we get about the head spa is a fair one. Is this just an expensive hair wash?
Japanese Head Spa in Peoria, IL: What It Actually Is
It is not, and the difference comes down to what is being treated. A salon wash is about your hair. A head spa is about the skin underneath it. Your scalp is skin, with the same buildup, oil imbalance, dryness and sensitivity that shows up on your face, and almost nobody gives it any attention.
Our 75-minute clinical head spa at Vanilla Sugar Face & Body is built around that idea. Here is what those 75 minutes actually look like.
Why the Scalp Deserves Its Own Treatment
Shampoo is designed to clean hair. It is not designed to clear mineral deposits, layered product residue or the flaking that comes with an irritated scalp, and it does nothing to correct an oil imbalance at the root.
So the buildup stays. Hair loses shine and volume, the roots feel greasy within a day, the scalp itches, and most people respond by washing more often, which usually makes the imbalance worse. Treating the scalp directly interrupts that cycle at the source rather than managing the symptoms week after week.
What the Treatment Addresses
- Scalp buildup and dandruff: product residue, mineral deposits and flaking that shampoo alone does not clear
- Dull or brittle hair: hair that has lost its shine and volume because the scalp beneath it has been neglected
- Itchy or irritated scalp: persistent itching, flaking or sensitivity that makes you conscious of your scalp all day
- Oil and dryness imbalance: excess oil at the roots, or a tight, dry scalp that never quite feels comfortable
Your 75 Minutes, Step by Step
The consultation
Nothing starts until we have assessed your scalp and hair properly. What we find shapes which therapies are used, because a scalp with heavy buildup and a scalp that is dry and reactive need different approaches.
Clinical-grade therapies
A series of scalp treatments selected for your specific concerns. This is the corrective part of the appointment and the reason a head spa sits closer to a facial than to a wash.
Gentle steam
Steam softens buildup and opens the scalp so the treatments can actually reach it. Skip this step and products sit on top of the debris rather than working underneath it.
A customized massage
Scalp massage tailored to you, and the part most clients tell us they remember afterwards. It is relaxing, and it is also functional, supporting circulation to the area you have just treated.
Time to do nothing at all
You spend the appointment reclined on a heated table in a private room with soft lighting and gentle music. Most clients arrive curious about their scalp and leave talking about how rested they feel.

Timing It Around Your Hair Color
This is the detail worth planning for. Book your head spa within one to two weeks before your next color appointment, not after.
The treatment can improve how your color takes by gently detoxifying the scalp and removing mineral buildup, so your colorist is working on a cleaner canvas. It can also pull existing color, which is exactly why the order matters.
Mention your color appointment when you book and we will advise you on the timing.
Pricing and Homecare
The head spa is new to Peoria, so we are running introductory pricing while people discover it.
For results that hold, we build customized homecare regimens that support scalp health between visits. Your therapist will recommend what suits your scalp specifically rather than handing you a generic routine.
Common Questions About the Head Spa
Is this just a fancy hair wash?
No. The focus is the scalp rather than the hair. We work on the root causes of buildup, irritation, oil imbalance and flaking using clinical-grade therapies, and the hair improves as a result.
How long is the treatment and what does it cost?
The full experience is 75 minutes at an introductory price of $135, including the consultation, therapies, steam, massage and relaxation time. Add-ons are a leave-in scalp treatment at $30 and a blow dry at $35.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone dealing with buildup, dandruff, an itchy or flaky scalp, excess oil, dryness, or hair that feels dull and flat. Bring any diagnosed scalp condition to your consultation so we can work around it.
Do I need to do anything at home afterwards?
Homecare is optional but it is what keeps the results going. We put together a regimen suited to your scalp rather than expecting one session to carry you indefinitely.
Will my hair be styled afterwards?
Styling is not part of the treatment, though you can add a blow dry for $35 if you are heading somewhere afterwards.
